South Miami Art Festival

What It's All About:

November marks the beginning of festival season here in South Florida, and the South Miami Art Festival is just the event to kick it all off. When the event first started 40 years ago, it was no more than an arts and crafts festival for local residents. Today, the festival features more than 100 artists from around the country specializing in such diverse media as painting, glass, jewelry, digital art, drawing, graphics, metal work, wood, photography, clay, sculpture, and mixed media.

You Gotta See This:
M1 says: Check out photographer Marlon Pereira’s work at booth 99 for some stunning land and underwater photography. Marlon, who is a native South Floridian, travels the world in order to capture the best shots of beautiful beaches, coral reefs, wild animals, and landscapes. For a preview, go to www.bluesubmersion.com.

M2 say: Phil Fung’s pieces are breathtaking and original. Humor and vivid choices of colors are common features of his works. Borrowing ingredients from both nature and pop culture, Fung often brings together multiple images into one harmonious piece. Oh yeah, and he also likes to draw penguins. You can find him over at booth 53.

Where You Can Find It:

Sunset Drive between US-1 and Red Road, South Miami, FL 33143

When This Is Happening:

Saturday, November 5th to Sunday, November 6th from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

How Much $$$: This lovely little event is gratis though you should definitely bring some cash to purchase prints of your favorite works of art and take them home with you.

Where to Eat: Five Guys Burgers and Fries on 1540 S Dixie Hwy. Sure there’s food at the festival, but if you’re going to spend $10 on food, you should at least make sure to get your money’s worth. Five Guys practically embodies “go big or go home”. Less than $3.50 will get you a “little” burger, which is actually the size of an average cheeseburger at your local fast food chain. Just wait until you see their regular burger! Oh, and also, three words: Best. Fries. EVER! An order of fries is more than enough for two people. Needless to say, $10 at Five Guys goes a long way.

Where to Park: Metrorail Parking: South Miami Station on 5949 Sunset Drive ($4/day). It’s a little bit of walk from the Festival (about 4 minutes worth), but the low daily parking fare is well worth the effort. Besides walking is healthy – it does the body gooooood.

Getting Around: Although there is plenty to see and do, the festival is just over four city blocks and easily navigable by foot.

Good For: Arts Lovers, Family Outing, Dates, Meet-up with Friends, Lunch al Fresco

Event Type: Art, Food, Music, Festival
